THE ADVENTURE STARTS AT HOME

How to Reveal a Surprise Trip to Kids: Make the Announcement Part of the Adventure

You’ve booked the trip. You’ve kept the secret. You may even have managed to discuss flights without someone shouting, “WHERE ARE WE GOING?”

Now comes the fun part: telling the children.

At Wanderlings, we’ve made activity packs for so many destinations that we thought it was time to help with the moment before the journey begins. Our Surprise Trip Reveal Kit turns your holiday announcement into a little adventure of its own.

Because “we’re going on holiday” is good news. Finding out through a trail of clues makes it a story.

Start with a mysterious envelope

Leave an envelope on the breakfast table, slip it under a bedroom door or hand it over with a very serious announcement:

“Something has arrived for you. Apparently, it’s important.”

Inside, place the first clue. Let curiosity do the rest.

You don’t need an elaborate setup or a house decorated like an airport. A few hiding places and a secret worth discovering are plenty.

Turn the reveal into a treasure hunt

A surprise holiday scavenger hunt gives children something to do while the excitement builds.

Choose familiar hiding places around your home: beside their shoes, near a favourite book or tucked inside a suitcase. For younger children, read the clues together. Older children can take charge of the search.

Keep the route short enough to stay fun. The aim is excited giggles, rather than a family argument about what “somewhere cosy” means.

Our printable kit gives you a starting point for creating that moment, with travel-themed clues and space to make the surprise your own.

Save the destination for the final discovery

The last clue should lead to the big announcement.

You could hide it inside a suitcase, wrap it like a present or place it beside something connected to the trip: sunglasses for a beach holiday, walking boots for an outdoor adventure or a toy train for a journey by rail.

A personalised boarding pass makes a lovely finishing touch. Let them find it, read it and watch the destination sink in.

Then prepare for questions. Lots of questions.

“Are we going today?”
“Can I take all my teddies?”
“Does Grandma know?”

Make it fit your family

A surprise trip reveal can be as simple or theatrical as you like.

Try it on a birthday morning, at Christmas or on an ordinary Saturday that suddenly becomes much more exciting. It could announce a big holiday, a weekend away or a visit to someone the children have been missing.

If siblings are taking part, let them work as a team and open the final surprise together. You can give each child a small role so everyone gets a turn.

And if your child prefers time to prepare, reveal the trip well before departure. They can still enjoy the surprise and have time to ask questions, choose what to pack and look forward to it.

A little preparation, a lovely memory

Print the kit, choose your clues, add your trip details and hide the final reveal. Then enjoy being the person who knows something wonderful is about to happen.

You could keep the boarding pass afterwards, tuck it into a holiday scrapbook or take a photograph of the moment they discover where they’re going.

The holiday may still be weeks away. The first memory can start at the kitchen table.
