What to pack for Iceland with kids

The useful family checklist: warm layers, weatherproof essentials and a few things that make long drives much easier.

Start with layers, not one heavy coat

Icelandic weather changes quickly. A breathable base layer, a warm middle layer and a genuinely waterproof outer layer give children more flexibility than one bulky coat. Pack at least two sets of base layers so one can dry while the other is being worn.

The essential family checklist

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers for each child
  • Warm hat, gloves and neck warmer
  • Wool or synthetic base layers
  • Waterproof walking shoes with good grip
  • Reusable water bottle and easy car snacks
  • Small binoculars and a notebook
  • Swimsuit and quick-drying towel for pools and hot springs

Useful gear for the family bag

These are practical starting points rather than a reason to overpack. Check the current size, colour and availability on Amazon before ordering.

Make the road journey part of the trip

Keep one small activity wallet within reach rather than packing everything in the boot. Include pencils, a clipboard, a simple map and observation games. The Wanderlings Iceland pack was designed for exactly these stretches between waterfalls, towns and swimming pools.
