DUBAI WITH CURIOUS KIDS

Dubai with kids: turn the journey into part of the adventure

A family holiday becomes more memorable when children know what to look for. Here are simple ways to build the excitement before you arrive—without reaching for another screen.

A family looking across Dubai towards the Burj Khalifa, desert and an abra boat

Dubai can feel almost invented for young explorers. It has the world’s tallest building, wooden boats crossing the Creek, enormous fountains, desert dunes and a skyline that looks as if someone drew it for a story. Give children a few things to notice before the trip and they arrive ready to take part, rather than simply follow the adults.

Start the adventure before take-off

Show children where Dubai sits on a map and ask what they imagine the city will look, sound and feel like. Then give them a small travel mission: spot a landmark, learn a greeting, design a skyscraper or record three things that surprise them.

A few destination-themed pages in the hand luggage can also bridge the difficult stretches of a flight. Mazes, drawing prompts, word puzzles and observation games offer variety without chargers, headphones or an internet connection.

Five things children can look for in Dubai

  • The Burj Khalifa: look up and count how many different shapes they can see in its outline.
  • An abra on Dubai Creek: notice how these small wooden boats contrast with the modern skyline.
  • Arabic lettering: choose a favourite sign and carefully copy the shapes into a travel journal.
  • Desert patterns: look for ripples, tracks and shadows in the sand.
  • Unexpected wildlife: keep an eye open for camels, birds and the creatures that appear in local decorations and souvenirs.

A simple screen-free Dubai challenge

Ask each child to become the family’s official Dubai detective. Give them a notebook or a few printed pages and award one point whenever they spot something from a prepared list. Include easy finds such as a palm tree and trickier ones such as an old wind tower, a dhow or something written in both Arabic and English.

The challenge works on airport transfers, walks and sightseeing days. It encourages children to study the place around them—and gives the family plenty to talk about over dinner.

What belongs in a Dubai activity pack?

The most useful pack mixes quick wins with activities children can settle into for longer. Look for landmark puzzles, drawing tasks, simple facts, travel games and space to capture memories. Black-and-white pages are economical to print and double as colouring activities.

You do not need to print everything at once. Choose a few pages for the outward flight, keep a handful for quiet time at the hotel and save the travel-journal pages for the journey home.

Let them notice the real place

The aim is not to keep children silently occupied for every minute of the holiday. It is to give them enough background and curiosity to look up when the real thing appears. A puzzle about the Burj Khalifa is enjoyable on the plane; recognising it from the taxi window is the moment they will remember.
